Issues Facing Kingston Parking The City of Kingston continues to grow with new industrial parks, new businesses, new housing developments and revitalization efforts while the Downtown is at risk due to a fundamental lack of parking and planning. In the past several years, Kingston has worked hard to attract more people to the downtown core, but it has not helped to alleviate the existing parking problem. Transit As Kingston grows, we are seeing more vehicles on the road than ever before. We should be doing everything we can to promote affordable and efficient modes of transportation. Many areas of Kingston are under serviced or not serviced at all by public transit and this needs to change. In addition, Kingston needs more direct bus routes so that public transportation is a more appealing option. Infrastructure The neverending push towards growth should not ignore basic infrastructure requirements like water, sewage, electricity and gas. Honestly, I would rather have safe and clean water than worry about the acoustics in a yet-to-be-constructed facility! Accountability / Fiscal Responsibility In a household budget, we should all worry about our needs before we consider our wants. The City should be no different. The City should be finishing existing projects and maintaining existing facilities before embarking on new and expensive wants. Economic Growth: Attracting New Business and Keeping Existing Business While Kingston is busy looking for new businesses and making concessions to attract them to locate/relocate to this area, it is critical that the City does not forget about existing and long-standing businesses that have helped to build Kingston. In addition, Kingston should give serious consideration to the sustainability of new large employers. Kingston needs to remember that there are business sectors other than high-tech (or those that consider themselves to be high-tech)! Our growth should be diversified in such a way as to avoid reliance upon single industries or sectors for the majority of jobs. |
